The North Pole With an introduction by Theodore Roosevelt

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. Handsome quarto in green cloth with embossed gilt medallion to the front board, xii, 326 pp.; frontispiece, four photogravure plates and 112 tipped plates (for a total of 116). Bindings stained, hinges strengthened, preliminaries thumbed, internally very good. A classic work in the genre of polar exploration, this is an attractive example of the first British trade edition in green cloth. Limited signed editions in blue marocco and japon vellum were issued the same year.

The American expedition to the North Pole has been marked by controversy, both with regard to Commander Peary's claims to be the first to the Pole, and also for the removal of Inuit from their tribal lands to the United States. This edition is richly illustrated and includes portrait studies of the Inuit whom assisted the various U.S. polar sled expeditions of the first decade of the twentieth century. Item #5164
