A Puff of Kief No. 12 in the Morning Makes a Man as Strong as a Hundred Camels in the Courtyard
Berkeley: Berkeley Bonaparte, 1967. Lithograph poster in portrait format, a cannabis plant depicted next to a hookah shisha and pipe over a brown background, 36cmx50.5cm. Some foxing along front edges and poster back, otherwise a fine copy. A Puff of Kief No. 12 lithograph poster is a second printing. The first printing of this poster was in black and white.
This poster was designed by American artist Rick Griffin (1944-1991) and printed by Berkeley Bonaparte, a company founded by Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Wes Wilson, and Griffin himself in 1967. Berkeley Bonaparte participated in the creation and in the marketing of psychedelic posters for rock bands, dance concerts, and other events in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Rick Griffin's poster was printed during the Summer of Love of 1967 that combined anti-war sentiment, spiritual awakening, hippie culture, and the use of hallucinogenic drugs. Griffin's A Puff of Kief lithograph poster illustrates this movement while presenting a fun take on old tobacco ads. Item #5098
