Sopwith Camel - Neon Rose 5 Feb 6,7,8,9,11,12 - Minors Welcome - The Only Alternative - Fri-Feb 10 Matrix - 3138 Fullmore - San Francisco
San Francisco: Neon Rose #5, 1967. Concert poster in portrait format, psychedelic illustration of a camel merged with a Sopwith aircraft over a neon orange background with text in pink and blue, 36cmx51cm. Back foxed, otherwise a fine copy. The Sopwith Camel Neon Rose 5 poster was designed by Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso. Moscoso is famous for creating psychedelic rock posters and underground comix in the 1960s and 1970s. Photographic collages and the choice of vibrant colours composed his artistic work. His preference for vivid colours have often been considered to be inspired by Jeff Albers who was one of his professors at Yale and who, in 1963, published Interaction of Color.
This poster was originally for a concert held in San Francisco in February 1967 with an exceptional session on February 10th of the same year at the Matrix club. Unlike the Fullmore or the Avalon clubs, the Matrix allowed entry to minors.
In early 1967, the Soptwith Camel, an American psychedelic rock band, hit the charts with "Hello, Hello" and a couple of months later with "Postcard from Jamaica". The band loved Moscoso's work and they chose it to be the cover of their first eponymous record which was released the same year. Item #5091
