FUKUTARO, Masuda

Tokyo: Masada Fukutarō, Circa 1895. Landscape-format three-colour lithograph printed on cream-coloured paper. Print area is 43.8 x 30 cm; including border, this comes to 51.5 cm x 38 cm. Boarder darker in tone than print area, some minor edge tears have been expertly repaired; otherwise a near-fine print with strong colour. Masada Fukutarō is credited with printing and publishing this print in Meiji 28 (1895) in Tokyo. It depicts a battle scene between Japanese and Chinese soldiers during the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). Pyongyang fell to the Japanese in September of 1894 when the Genbu (Xuanwu) Gate was overtaken and opened by 16 Japanese commandos, who subsequently became national heroes. The cartouche at the upper right of the print lists the names of these brave men.

The fighters are depicted in great detail and subtle shading. The print is coloured in blue and peach, with accomplished black linework bringing the vivid images to life. Item #5085
