This striking poster was commissioned by the Jewish Welfare Board, created by Sydney Riesenberg and printed by Alex Gravure Inc. in New York. It depicts a blue Star of David next to a group of soldiers, with the central figure raising his hand towards the viewer. The heading reads: "Civiilians" with accompanying text as follows: "When we go through this we need all the help and comfort you can give." This poster was used to fundraise for the Board during the United War Work Campaign of 1918.
The National Jewish Welfare Board was formed on April 9, 1917, three days after the United States declared war on Germany. The organisation recruited and trained rabbis for military service, and provided support materials to the newly commissioned chaplains.
Sydney Riesenberg (1885-1971) was a professional illustrator and became well known for the posters he designed for the United States Marine Corps and the Liberty Bond Programs. He also illustrated book covers and magazines, and painted a wide range of subjects. Item #5034
