France: L'Illustration, 1918. Small, landscape-format poster printed on cream-coloured paper. Print area is approximately 48 cm x 32.5 cm. Total size of poster, including border, is 60.5 cm x 40.5 cm. Reproduction of a colour lithograph. Very slight wear on upper right-hand side horizontal edge, small pale spot on boarder at lower horizontal edge; otherwise, a fine print with vibrant colour. A reproduction published as a supplement to the journal L'Illustration in October 1918, this print shows Kaiser Wilhelm II under a cloud and pursued by a multitude of Allies carrying their nations' flags. The original artwork was a lithograph by Abel Faivre titled L'Emprunt de la Libération (The Liberation Loan).
Jules Abel Faivre (1867-1945) was one of the most well known war-poster artists and cartoonists in France. He was born in Lyon and trained there at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and in Paris at the École Julian.
The text on this print reads: "Reproduction en fac-similé de la composition originale dessinée au fusain et au pastel par Abel Faivre, pour l'affiche du 4me emprunt national (Octobre 1918). Supplement a L'Illustration". The English translation is as follows: "Facsimile reproduction of the original composition drawn in charcoal and pastel by Abel Faivre for the poster of the 4th National Loan, October 1918."
