DE HANSI

France: L'Illustration, 1917. Small poster printed on cream-coloured paper. Print area 31.5 cm x 40.5 cm, size including border is 40.5 cm x 60 cm. Reproduction of a colour lithograph. A little wear on the lower right-hand side vertical edge; otherwise a fine print with vibrant colour. A reproduction published as a supplement to the journal L'Illustration in November 1917, this print shows the French army entering the city of Strasbourg, with children waving flags as they usher the soldiers into the town square. The original artwork was a lithograph by de Hansi (a pseudonym for Jean-Jacques Waltz) and advertised the 3rd National Defense Loan that aimed "to return Strasbourg to France".

The French wording translates as: "All must subscribe to the 3rd Loan of the National Defense; you will help our heroic soldiers" and "To give Strasbourg back to France".

Jean-Jacques Waltz (1873-1951) was born in Alsace. He was an artist, writer and a staunch pro-French activist. He is a considered a hero in France for his satirical work against the Germans, for which he was imprisoned in Leipzig in 1914. Item #5031
