[New York]: Liberty Loan Committee, Second Federal Reserve District, Circa 1917. Medium-sized lithographic poster in black ink on light-cream unbleached paper, 47 cm x 62.2 cm including border, central images contained within a 38.5 cm x 55 cm area. Illustrated with three sketches. Small tear on lower right-hand side edge without loss of text, two ink marks on right-hand side edge without loss of text, a faint horizontal fold in centre; otherwise a near-fine, clean and crisp copy. The rousing artwork for this World War One propaganda poster, designed to encourage the American public to buy war bonds, was created by James Montgomery Flagg. Flagg was best known for his iconic Uncle Sam character, which was used in several U. S. Army recruiting posters during World War One.

This artwork shows sketches of three men from three different branches of the military. Each one has text beside them: "The Road to France—He is Keeping It Open"; "The Road to Berlin—He is Building It"; The Guns that Do It—He is Making Them". The main text reads: "But—the Liberty Bond You Buy—It Backs Them All" Item #4990
