KOGYU, Tsukioka

Japan: Matsuki Heikichi (Daikokuya), 1901. Landscape-format woodblock print in black and coloured ink on lightweight paper, 36 cm x 25 cm (including border), silver details, blind-embossed details. The artwork is presented in a cream-coloured folder with red cover and is hinge-mounted to inside. The front cover's window is backed with acetate. Light foxing on edges of print, minor spotting, corners and edges of print are a little worn; otherwise a near-fine print with crisp detail and vibrant colour. One of Kogyo's most important series, Pictures of Nô Plays was released in five volumes between 1897 and 1902. The series depicts famous Nô (Noh) actors in kyogen plays, bringing acclaimed performances to life. This particular print vividly captures the expression of the actors, and Kogyu's skill is apparent in the fine detail of their costumes, which include silver highlights in the design of the textiles. A delicate swirling pattern is blind embossed on the lower part of the artwork, adding texture to the sparse but evocative composition.

Tsukioka Kogyu (Kōgyo, 1869-1927) was an esteemed artist of Japan's Meiji period (1869-1912). While he had a talent for depicting a broad range of subjects, he chose to focus on creating artworks of Japanese Nô (Noh) actors for the majority of his career. Item #4978
