Flying Aces 1934, Volume XIV Number 3 (January) to Volume XIX Number 1 (December)

Springfield, Massachusetts, USA: Magazine Publishers Inc, 1934. Set of 11 quarto issues, illustrated printed wrappers, each issue 96 pp., total of 1056 pp. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, diagrams, illustrations, cartoons and advertising of the day. Each issue includes patterns for making aircraft models. Some wear on the spines of the majority of issues, slight discolouration of back covers of March, May, August and October issues, June issue has a small piece of tape on inside tail-edge of back cover. Browning on all leaves as common to publications of this period; overall a very good set that includes some near-fine issues. First edition.

Touted by the publishers as the "Only Complete Aviation Magazine" (January, February, March) and "Three Aviation Magazines in One!" with "Fiction, Fact, Model Building!" (March onwards), this comprehensive and entertaining set of issues includes thrilling fictional short stories, dramatic articles about key moments in aviation and aviation heroes, and a section for model makers with plans for model aircraft. With "Every Story Complete – No Serials!" the reader's imagination is fired and the flame fanned by the full-colour covers depicting beautifully rendered aircraft in action. Fiction stories across the issues include a number of "Phillip Strange", "Phineas", "Battling Grogan" and "Hell-Cat" tales, and dramatic articles by journalists of the time Ogilvie, Whitehouse, Lewis, Moore, Hughes and others.

While there are only 11 issues for 1934, the set is complete as there was no issue released in April of that year. This complete set, a rare item in itself, is in remarkable condition given its age and would make an excellent addition to any aviation magazine or book collection. Item #4966
