Walls Resisting the Third Reich—One Woman's Story

Boston, Massachusetts: Beacon Press, 1974. Octavo, dark taupe hardcover, spine printed with turquoise lettering, cover printed with black graphic, [vi], 248 pp. Spotting on top and fore-edge of text block, light foxing on endpapers and some leaves throughout, dust-jacket a little worn and torn without loss of text; overall a very good copy. First American edition. An account by Hiltgunt Zassenhaus, German philologist and interpreter, of her experiences during World War Two. While employed by the Third Reich, Zassenhaus quietly resisted their directives and brought sustenance and hope to thousands of political prisoners. She received numerous awards and was nominated for the 1974 Nobel Peace Prize by two members of the Norwegian government, both of whom had been prisoners of war in Nazi Germany. This is a remarkable story by a brave and compassionate woman. Item #4867
