Twentieth Century An Australian Quarterly Review

Vol. 1. No. 1 September, 1946

Melbourne: Polding Press, 1946. Small quarto, printed wrappers, 108 pp., four additional leaves at end (unpaginated) Spine faded and a little worn, top spine end and top corners bumped, edges of front and back covers faded, small localised tear on fore-edge of back cover, top right corner slightly bent, light spotting on top and fore-edge of text block, some spotting in outer margins on some leaves, single darker spot in same location in outer margin on leaves 73 to 86; otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Volume 1, Number 1 of Twentieth Century, an Australian quarterly publication launched in September, 1946, that ran until 1975. The intention of the journal was to provide readers with thoughtful articles on a variety of subjects, including foreign and national affairs, education and social sciences, literature and art, with contributions by both Australian and international authors.

This debut issue contains ten articles, including "Thoughts on U.N.O." by D. G. M. Jackson, "The Radical Cardinal" by James G. Murtagh and "Poet's at War" by James McInerney, as well as a number of book reviews. While some of the ideas presented on certain topics may differ markedly from those of today, this journal offers an intriguing insight into the thoughts of a country emerging from the war years.
