Loftus, Australia: Australian Military History Publications, 1997. Quarto, illustrated printed hardback, xiv, 130 pp., illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs and maps, some documents and diagrams included, six appendices included. Errata slip loosely inserted in between front endpapers. Tail end of spine a little bumped, top corner of back cover a little bumped, very light spotting on top edge of text block, faint stitch marks at one point of spine on first few leaves, one small spot of foxing inside front cover; otherwise a near-fine copy. First edition. An account of the daring 1942 mission to support Russia undertaken by Royal Australian Air Force Squadron No. 455 and Royal Air Force Squadron No. 144 during World War Two. The flight from Scotland to Russia was deemed beyond the range of the Handley Page Hampden, yet the pilots flying these planes managed to traverse two occupied countries with only vintage maps from 1919 to guide them. Albeit with dry tanks and losses, they reached their destination and carried out their mission. The author is the son of Bob Raebel, who was in charge of the RAAF maintenance party in Russia.
