Airplanes of the Royal Aircraft Factory

Wiltshire, UK: The Crowood Press, 1999. Quarto, black hardcover, spine embossed with gilt lettering, 144 pp., frontispiece, illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, some documents included. Foxing on endpapers, spotting on top and fore-edge of text block, dust-jacket a little worn and foxed at edges, old smell, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Part of the Crowood Aviation Series, this volume examines the history and aircraft of the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough, England, which operated in the early years of the 20th Century. Originally an aeronautical balloon school, the factory went on to create not only some of the best aircraft of World War One, but also the B.E.2c, often labelled the worst aircraft of that war. Paul Hare's detailed research shows that while much maligned, the Royal Aircraft Factory had many successes, and paved the way for the United Kingdom's Royal Aircraft Establishment and the world-renowned Defence Evaluation and Research Agency.
