Bader lost both of his legs in a flying accident in 1931. While invalided from the Royal Air Force in 1933, he rejoined the RAF in 1939, quickly rising to the status of Wing Commander by 1941. He first saw action in his Spitfire in Dunkirk, and then in a Hurricane in the Battle of Britain. With his offical score being 22.5 German aircraft destroyed, his service led him to be known as one of Britain's foremost flying aces. Item #4609
