The Black One

South Yarra, Australia: Langate Publishing, 1984. Quarto, burgundy cloth, spine embossed with gilt lettering, [x], 172 pp., approximately 136 additional leaves (unpaginated) at the back with two appendices and an index. The appendices consist of reproductions of hand-written journal entries and hand-drawn maps. Some black-and-white photographs are included in the earlier part of the text. Light foxing on endpapers, dust-jacket spine slightly faded; otherwise a near-fine copy. First edition. This is the author's second autobiography, written as an accompanying volume to his first book, Adversity in Success, which covers 1939 to 1948. In this volume, Hewitt describes his life from 1901, when he was born in Tyledon, Victoria, through to 1939. He recounts his service as a naval aviator with the Royal Australian Navy, then his move to the Royal Australian Air Force in 1922, in which he served until his retirement. Hewitt includes two of his Midshipman journals, one detailing operations against the National Young Turks in Asia Minor and the other describing incursions into the Black Sea during the Civil War in Russia.
