The Australian Imperial Force in France. During the Allied offensive, 1918 Volume six of the Australian Official History of the War of 1914-1918

Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1942. Large thick octavo, original maroon cloth with gilt lettering, lxxvi, 1100 pp., numerous maps and diagrams. Edges a little foxed, endpapers sympathetically renewed, a near-fine copy. 'The publication of this volume brings to an end the production of the Australian Official History of the War of 1914-1918 nearly twenty-three years after the writing of it was begun at Tuggranong Homestead, near Canberra. The time taken has been due mainly to the detailed character of the narrative, but also to the fact that, even with regard to the main course of the campaigns described, the work has been largely pioneering.

This volume deals with those months in which the First World War turned against the German Army on the Western front, and shows how, in the crucial Amiens sector, that change was brought about...' (from the preface).

Cyril Falls, in his bibliography War Books (London, 1930, pages 7-8) notes the volumes then in print, and adds pithy but nonetheless genuine praise for the endeavour of writing up Australia's official history. Item #4181
