Andree and his Balloon
Westminster: Archibald Constable & Co, 1898. Small octavo, original gilt-decorated blue cloth, viii, 306 pp., plates. Internal hinges split and tender, joints and backstrip rubbed, yet a good and attractive copy overall. Salomon August Andree was a Swedish engineer, physicist, aeronaut, and polar explorer who died while attempting to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon. This beautifully bound book provides a narrative of the entire adventure, including the design and assembly of the special balloon for arctic conditions, and the extremely hazardous meteorological environment around the North Pole.
