Aerial Navigation With notes concerning some recent developments in the art. Translated from the Dutch by George E. Waring
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1894. Small octavo, original gilt decorated deep red cloth, vi, 210 pp., illustrations and diagrams throughout. Front and rear hinges a little split and very tender, front endpapers renewed, rear joint partially split; otherwise an attractive little book. This translation of the original Dutch language original contains a comprehensive summary of the development of aerial navigation from the balloon of Montgolfier (1783) through to the early stages of the investigations and discussions by Langley, Maxim, and Holland (1892). Examples from nature (principally avian flight) are used to explain the operational principles of lift. Several chapters are devoted to early ballooning history and here lies the origin of human aerial navigation and map-making. Item #388
