With the Flagship of the South
Sydney: William Brooks and Company, 1909. Octavo, original illustrated colour wrappers, [viii], 132 pp., frontispiece and eight photo plates. Wrappers a bit rubbed and split, very good copy overall. While serving as a special correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald, Charles Bean joined the cruise of H.M.S. Powerful, flagship of the Australian Squadron, during her voyage through the south Pacific. At the conclusion of the cruise, the Australians met with the American Fleet in Auckland. This book was published the same year by Werner Laurie in London, but the Sydney edition is desirable for featuring original watercolours by Bean himself on the front cover and frontispiece (showing him to be a competent, if somewhat pedestrian, artist).
