Item #3180 Letters from France. C. E W. BEAN, Charles Edwin Woodrow.

Letters from France

London: Cassell, 1917. Octavo, original green cloth, xii, 232 pp., folding map and eight plates (including frontispiece). Some foxing of the edges, a very good copy. Firsthand account of fighting in France by Charles Bean, the official war correspondent. In the preface, he writes 'they were written to depict the surroundings in which, and the spirit with which, that history has been made; first in the quiet green Flemish lowlands, then with a swift, sudden plunge into the grim, reeking, naked desolation of the Somme... if these letters convey some reflection of the spirit which fought at Pozíères, their object is well fulfilled'.
