Royal Australian Air Force Landing Grounds 1939-1945. Australia and Adjacent Islands
Adelaide: privately assembled, 1992. Three volumes of photostat charts measuring 50 x 30 cm. Each volume contains approximately 200 plans, arranged alphabetically in ring binders. Very good condition. This is an archive of all R.A.A.F. airfields and landing grounds, being photostat copies of the original plans generated between 1942 to 1945. The collection comprises approximately 600 plans.
The plans were held by the Department of Civil Aviation and have a typical scale of 1:1000. The archive was assembled in Adelaide by aviation history enthusiast Dennis Whiley, for his personal research use. As such, this archive was never intended to be published or made available to the public, and represents an opportunity for Second World War historians interested in the logistical capacities of the R.A.A.F on the home front.
Each of the plans is labelled by location, and includes cartographic co-ordinates and sundry information regarding road and rail access, salient geographical features and notes pertaining to the surface condition of the runway and ancillary workshops, gun emplacements, and so forth. Item #3166
