Parramatta: Cumberland Argus Printing Works, 1899. Single printed sheet measuring 138 x 208 mm. Very good condition. Rare ephemeral notice relating to the departure of Australian troops for the Second Boer War in South Africa in 1899.

This sheet invites members of the Parramatta Wesleyan congregation to meet for a special service dedicated to troops, to 'pray for divine protection of our contingent and for success of British Arms'

The service was organised and administered by Reverend James Edward Carruthers (1848-1932), a vigorous Wesleyan circuit preacher who travelled widely throughout New South Wales before establishing himself in Parramatta. A gifted preacher and ardent nationalist, Revered Carruthers organised the service amidst widespread public excitement about the Transvaal War. The sheet announces hymns to be sung during the service include 'Before Jehova's Awful Throne' and 'Kipling's Recessional Hymn'.

Ephemeral printing of this type is unlikely to survive, and unsurprisingly we have not been able to locate any institutional holdings of this sheet. Item #3107
