Bill Newton V.C. The Short Life of a RAAF Hero

Loftus: Australia Military History Publications, 1999. Octavo, illustrated wrapper on hardcover, xii, 98 pp., illustrations throughout. Rubbed at spine ends and corners, stamp on free endpaper 'Withdrawn from BCC Collection', otherwise a near-fine copy. William Ellis Newton joined the Royal Australian Air Force in the early months of World War II. Flight Lieutenant Bill Newton served with No 22 RAAF Squadron in New Guinea from May 1942, and completed 52 operational sorties as a Boston Bomber pilot. He was captured and executed on the order of Japanese Unit Commander Uichi Komai and Ruitaro Fujita in accordance with Japanese Bushido and was beheaded with a Japanese sword. His remains were found in October 1943 by Carl Jacobson in the Lae area. Bill Newton was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously. Item #2898
