One Who Served

Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1919. Octavo, original burgundy cloth with gilt lettering, x, 216 pp., frontispiece, one plate. Front hinge a little tender, cloth slightly spotted, otherwise a well-preserved copy. Soon after the U.S entered the war in 1917, Dinsmore Ely volunteered in the American Ambulance Field Service to secure immediate passage to France. Upon his arrival in July 1917 he was accepted in the LaFayette Flying Corps. Ely began his aviation training in a French school before joining the Escadrille for which he fought from January to April 1918 in the Toul sector near Verdun, before being sent to Montdidier. Dinsmore Ely died in April 1918, his resting place is in Des Gonard's cemetery, Versailles, France.

This memorial volume principally comprises letters home from the front, with a preface by Ely's father, and an addenda including poems by the young aviator. Item #2821
