The Airship Its Design, History, Operation and Future

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., circa 1931. Octavo, blue cloth, viii, 248 pp., 24 double-sided plates. Significant discolouration affects the spine, otherwise a very good copy. A comprehensive work on airships, with chapters on design, history and operation. The book is of some interest as both a summary of zeppelin design and advancement during the First World War, but was also written during the golden age of civilian airship travel. In so doing it encompasses the use of the zeppelin in both peace and war.

Of special interest are the two appendices. The first is a break-down of the fate of some 115 German and Allied zeppelins engaged during the First World War, with identification numbers listed (including those surrendered after the armistice and destroyed in war). The list includes 'losses due to inexperience in engineering', i.e. technical errors resulting in catastrophic fire and loss. The second appendix details the the examination and evaluation procedures for obtaining a British Airship Pilots Licence. Item #2703
