Robert Loraine Soldier - Actor - Airman

British stage actor Robert Loraine began his career in the late 19th century. At the turn of the twentieth century, he became interested in aviation and, in 1909, entered the Bleriot school at Pau, France to learn aviation. During the Great War, Robert Loraine served in the Royal Flying Corps as a flying officer in the special reserve and was later promoted to Flight Commander. He received the MC in October 1915. In 1917, he became Wing Commander, led the No. 40 Squadron, and was awarded the DSO. One month after World War One ended, Robert Loraine obtained the honorary rank of Major after resigning from the Royal Air Force due to his failing health. Item #2670
