The 148th Aero Squadron, Air Service, United States Army or "148th American", as it was popularly known because of its attachment to the Royal Air Force, with whom all of its war-flying activities were carried out, has the exceptional record of forty-seen German planes crashed or brought down in flames and nineteen out of control which were officially credited. This was accomplished in a period of less than four months.

The 148th Aero Squadron was formed in Texas and trained at the Royal Flying Corps Fields at Fort Worth, Texas, sent on to Garden City, New York, then overseas, landing in England at Liverpool. A few days in a rest camp and then on to France by way of Southampton and Le Havre.

This book provides an account of the difficulties, the trials, the good times, the sadness, the hardships, and the successes, not only of the officers but of the enlisted men, who at times, faced dangers as great as their pilots, who crossed the lines amid "Archie" bursts and machine-gun bullets to fight the Germans in the air.
