Melbourne: The Miegunyah Press Melbourne University Press, 1998. Quarto, green hardcover with spine lettering, xx, 292 pp., 16 double-sided plates, integrated maps including one folded map. Light flecking on bottom-edge boards, otherwise a near-fine copy in dust jacket. A portrayal of the Hagen-Sepik Patrol which constituted Australia's last great exploring expedition. Over 350 were part of the patrol, most of them were New Guinean Highlanders and extremely familiar with the area. Jim Taylor led the expedition, accompanied by two other Australians, John Black and Pat Walsh. Their fine map contained details that would become of strategic importance when the war broke out; information that should not fall into the Japanese forces' hands.

This author interviewed New Guinean Highlanders, relating their stories as well as comparing unpublished diaries against official reports. Item #2483
