Flying Matilda Early Days in Australian Aviation

Sydney: Angus And Robertson, 1961. Octavo, hardcover, 348 pp., plates, with the dust-jacket. A few tiny perforations affect the preliminary leaves, dust-jacket moderately rubbed and chipped. Overall a fresh and attractive copy. An exciting account of the early days of Australian aviation, written by a First War pilot who was personally acquainted with many of the pioneers in this book. This copy is inscribed by the author to George Augustus Taylor, an early Australian balloonist. Taylor has written his details on the half-title page, and added a colour drawing of a balloon in flight.

George Augustus Taylor, born 1902, was the son of Vincent Patrick Taylor, an early Australian parachutist who performed under the alias of 'Captain Penfold' during the first decades of the twentieth century. His uncle (also named George Taylor) was an associate of Lawrence Hargrave and collaborated with him on glider designs. Item #1960
