On 19 November 1941, the pride of the Australian Navy, the HMAS Sydney, fought a close-quarters naval battle with the German armed raider HSK Kormoran, off Carnarvon on the West Australia coast. Both ships were severely damaged and later sank. More than 300 German sailors were rescued - but every one of the 645 men on board the Sydney died. Item #1692
